Ingredients
A strawberry mint margarita is quite simple to make with just a few ingredients:
- Strawberries: fresh ripe strawberries to be muddled!
- Mint: fresh mint leaves pairs so well with strawberries and brings such a fresh herbaceous flavor to the drink
- Tequila: blanco tequila is best for margaritas
- Lime juice: fresh squeezed lime juice, always!
- Orange liqueur: such as triple sec or cointreau - adds a bit of bitterness and herbal/citrusy notes that are in a classic margarita
- Agave nectar: to add just a hint more of sweetness to bring out the strawberry flavor
Step by step instructions
This muddled strawberry cocktail is super easy to make in just a few quick steps!
1. Muddle. In a cocktail shaker, a mason jar, or directly in your glass, muddle the strawberries and mint together until the strawberries release their juices and the mint is very fragrant.
2. Mix. To the muddled mixture add the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and agave. Mix (or shake) to combine. If you made it in a cocktail shaker then pour over a cup of ice. If you made it in a glass then add some ice!
Tips and tricks
- Keep it chunky or strain – I like to keep the strawberry and mint pieces in the drink for added flavor, but if you’re really adverse to that then you can strain them out. It just might be a little light on the strawberry flavor!
- Blend the strawberries – another route for this easy strawberry margarita recipe is to blend the strawberries until smooth and then add the other ingredients!
- If you don’t have a muddler – the back of a wood spoon will work just fine!
- For a smoky flavor try mezcal
- Use a different kind of tequila – Swap blanco tequila for reposado or any other kind - whatever your preference is
Decorating margarita glasses
Add a lime wedge, lime round, some fresh strawberry pieces, fresh sprig of mint, and/or a salt rim!
To make a lime round, cut a thin slice of lime and then cut upward from the edge towards the center but just shy of the center because once you hit that it’s likely the lime will split and won’t stay on the glass!
You can take the salt rim up a notch by making it a margarita salt rim, which means using a mixture of kosher salt and lime zest
Making homemade simple syrup
If you want even more flavor, instead of using agave make a homemade mint syrup by warming equal parts water and sugar with some mint leaves until the sugar is dissolved. Then let it cool before adding to the drink. Or just make a regular simple syrup the same way by leaving out the mint.
FAQs
You’d need to let them defrost to the point of being able to smush them, but I don’t see why not, the drink will likely just be a bit more watery.
Any other berry would be great!
Sure can! Just add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until combined. For a thicker consistency use frozen strawberries.
Swap the tequila for something like rum to get more of a daiquiri inspired drink!
Basil would be a great swap!
A distilled liqueur flavored with orange so it's slightly sweet and slightly bitter. There are a few different brands - Triple Sec, Cointreau, Grand Marnier. Read more on it here.
